Since 2006, the annual Empty Bowls soup dinner and handmade bowl sale—hosted in partnership with the Grand Marais Art Colony and the generous support of local businesses—has played a critical role in battling food insecurity in Cook County, MN. With an annual fundraising goal of $30,000, Empty Bowls plays vital role in our community’s health and well-being.

In 2026, Vital North Foundation and Empty Bowls—Cook County formed a strategic alliance that will provide Empty Bowls with support while allowing the program to continue operating under its trusted name and mission.

In 2026, $200,000 was raised and granted to community organizations who help people face to face with food needs.

Last year's donations supported 45 nonprofits and all Cook County schools working to ensure children, families, and older adults have access to nutritious food. Organizations served include Birch Grove Community School and Saplings, Cook County Public Health and Human Services, Community Education / ECFE, Cooperation Station Daycare, Great Expectations School Lunch/Snack Program, Oshki Ogimaag Charter School food program, Grand Portage Headstart, Elderly Nutrition Program, Violence Prevention Center, Northwoods Daycare, and Step Up Daycare.
